Science is the map of what happens. Push it as far as it will go.
It can weigh the cliff and the fall, the height and the stone. It cannot tell you whether to jump, to step back, or to catch the stranger who slips at the edge. Knowing every fact about the world will never tell you what you owe it.
Across cultures that never met, the same shape keeps surfacing. Trace it.
A hero leaves the ordinary world, is called to a trial he feels unready for, descends into darkness, even death, and returns changed, carrying back something that saves the people he left. You've felt this shape your whole life. The universality is suggestive — not proof. But it is worth noticing.
This is not Christianity winning a beauty contest. It is one story that refuses to stay in the realm of metaphor — and invites you to weigh it like an event.
Did this one actually happen?
A man who lived
tapThat a Jewish teacher named Jesus lived in first-century Judea and was crucified under Pilate is granted by virtually all historians, believing or not, and noted by Roman and Jewish writers within a century. The bare facts aren't seriously in dispute.
Witnesses who changed
tapHis followers scattered in fear when he was killed. Then something turned them. Within weeks they were proclaiming, in the city that executed him, that he was alive — and they held to it under threat and loss. People will die for a lie they believe. It is stranger for the few who'd actually know to suffer for one they would have to be inventing.
A claim no one buried
tapThe movement caught fire in Jerusalem — the one city where producing a body would have ended it overnight. Its opponents had every motive to. The record we have is that they didn't; they argued instead about what had become of it.
None of this forces faith. It only makes dismissal cost more than you assumed.
Be honest about yourself for a moment. You have wronged people and been wronged. You have broken things you couldn't mend. You have felt the distance that opens between you and what is good — and known you could not close it alone.
The Cross is what it costs to mend that rupture from the inside. The hero does not wave the wrong away or pretend it never mattered. He takes its full weight into himself and carries it across, so the distance you could not close is closed from the other side.
You are not asked to become the hero — to climb, by your own strength, to a goodness you cannot reach. You already know where that road ends. You are offered the opposite. He came down to you. The gift held out — grace, meaning a gift you could not earn and do not deserve — is simply to be found, lifted, and carried home.
You won't walk it alone: this story has a living body two thousand years old whose whole task is to carry it to people exactly where you are.
We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried. The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the world to come. Amen.
